CBA Nigeria is working to prevent international fraud and theft in that country. CBA Nigeria President Thomas Sule said the chapter is investigating several alleged fraud incidents and recommends retailers and suppliers wanting to do business with purported Nigeria Christian-resources suppliers or buyers contact the chapter before agreeing to sell materials into Nigeria or to bill to Nigerian customers.
“We’re very concerned at the losses seen by international suppliers and distributors to fraudsters,” Sule reported in a statement. However, he said entering into supply or copyright contracts without a CBA Nigeria recommendation is why most fraud occurs.
Sule has asked companies to forward fraud complaints to the chapter. He said CBA Nigeria has investigations underway, but needs documentation of solicitations or purchase orders to legally pursue them. The chapter has contacted Nigerian police and Interpol to help investigate the incidents, Sule reported.
He said most U.S. companies that have complained of fraud or fraud attempts haven’t forwarded documents as evidence.
“It’s a paradox that CBA Nigeria is trying to help discourage fraudsters and to shield honest Christian businesses, but fail to get full cooperation from them in stopping fraud,” he said.
Nigeria has more than 200 Christian companies that work under Christian ethics and moral integrity, Sule said, adding the chapter can help international suppliers and retailers identify them and establish successful business and ministry relationships.
U.S. retailers have reported product losses through credit-card and check fraud on orders from Nigeria. The orders indicate the products will be used for ministry and provide a credit-card number or a check that can be verified. However, the orders are later found to fraudulent and made without the credit-card owner’s or checkholder’s approval.
CBA Nigeria has 89 retailer, 16 distributor, and 41 supplier members. The association provides training, networking, and other services to promote Christian-resources distribution and sale in the country.
CBA U.S.A. is working with CBA Nigeria to ensure it doesn’t invite Nigerian suppliers to CBA International Convention without a recommendation from the local chapter.
