St. Joseph’s Christian Supply in Visalia, California, has become a nonprofit operation manned by volunteers to stay open. “We tried to make it for-profit for a couple years and it just didn’t work,” says Ken Ramage, who purchased the store in 1992. “It’s more ministry than a profit thing.”

Now operated by Catholic Resource Ministries, the store is run by around 25 volunteers. “It’s very important for the community to have a faith-based place,” says Judy Ramage. “We probably couldn’t do it if it wasn’t volunteer.”
