Strand Book Store Owner, Fred Bass, passed away Jan. 3 at his home in Manhattan. He was 89 years old. The cause of death was congestive heart failure.

Bass assumed ownership of the Strand from his father in 1956 and grew the store into a New York City icon, expanding it to become the largest used-book store in the world.

In Bass’ honor, Leigh Altshuler, CIROBE communications director, is collecting memories of him and Strand Book Store at leigh@strandbooks.com.
