Mastercard is piloting a new smartphone payment acceptance in Poland that does not require the purchase of any POS equipment. Users will only need to download a mobile app and create a merchant account to begin accepting payments, making the process simpler and more cost-effective for small and micro-merchants.

The card network is conducting the pilot in conjunction with mobile app provider Mobeewave and acquiring banks Elavon and Polskie ePłatności. It will initially include 200 merchants from across Poland. Transactions will adhere to the current amount limit in Poland for contactless transactions without a PIN – about USD $14.
