NDP BookScan reports show unit sales of print books increased 1.9 percent in 2017 over 2016. Outlets that report to BookScan sold 687.2 million units in 2017, compared with 674.1 million in 2016. Further, print book unit sales have risen every year since 2013, with sales increasing by 10.8 percent from 2013 to 2017.

Juvenile nonfiction, juvenile fiction, and adult nonfiction categories all posted gains from 2016 to 2017, with adult fiction dropping slightly, by 0.7 percent. Board book unit sales also increased almost 11 percent. In addition, hardcover sales rose 3.6 percent, while unit sales of trade paperbacks increased 1.5 percent over 2016.
