Presenting CBA’s International Lifetime Achievement Award to author and speaker Josh McDowell on Sunday morning was especially meaningful for CBA President Curtis Riskey.
He told how attending a meeting that McDowell had spoken at when he was still a student in 1989 had sown seeds that later bloomed into faith in his own life. “How many millions more has he reached?” Riskey wondered before presenting the award recognizing McDowell’s “outstanding service and accomplishment.”
The author of 146 books—including the classic More Than a Carpenter—McDowell has seen them translated into 107 languages and distributed in almost 100 countries, with total sales of 63 million.
Accepting the award, he paid tribute to his wife, Dottie, for her support: “I never knew a woman could love as man as much as my wife loves me.” He also thanked his ministry staff and Christian retailers for their part in distributing his messages. “We all know that it takes a team.”
Giving an example of the impact of that work, McDowell told of hearing about a man jailed for murder in Jordan who was slipped a copy of More Than a Carpenter in his cell. He came to Christ as a result of reading it, and on his release led his wife and daughters to Christ too.
