In the U.S., a country proud of its cardboard hamburgers and free e-books, thinking about how competition might influence culture doesn’t amp up Facebook posts. But in France and Germany, the threat of Amazon.com to cultural foundations – especially reading and thinking – has been enough to push legislation to protect indie booksellers.

The online giant is seen as a bully, especially in France, home of Hachette Book Group now under siege by Amazon, and French leaders are trying to buy their indies some time to step up to the bully.
