It was just last year when Centricity recording artist Lauren Daigle won New Artist of the Year at the GMA Dove Awards. Last night (Oct. 11), Daigle took home the most coveted award of the evening when she was named Artist of the Year at the 47th annual GMA Dove Awards in Nashville, capping an extraordinary run for the 20-something vocalist. In addition, Daigle also garnered honors for Songwriter of the Year (Artist) and Pop/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year for her No. 1 single, “Trust In You,” upping her career Dove tally to six.
“I’m just so excited that the Kingdom is being uplifted and that people around the world are hearing His truth,” Daigle told press backstage. “I am so honored that He chooses music to be a thing that He breathes through to [touch] people’s hearts.”
Centricity also scored big as “The River” hitmaker Jordan Feliz earned the title of this year’s New Artist of the Year.
“Good, Good Father,” written by Pat Barrett and Tony Brown and made popular by Chris Tomlin, won “Song of the Year.” Meanwhile, Tomlin was honored with the SoundExchange Digital Radio Award, presented to artists whose music have been streamed 1 billion times. As the first Christian artist to accept this honor, Tomlin joins the ranks of elite recipients like Justin Timberlake, Garth Brooks and Pitbull.
Bethel Music’s massive worship anthem “No Longer Slaves” was named Worship Song of the Year. Jonathan David and Melissa Helser performed a stirring rendition of the song live on the televised portion; and fittingly, the couple’s Bethel Music debut, Beautiful Surrender, tops the Billboard Christian Albums Chart this week.
Other notable awards went to War Room, which was named Inspirational Film of the Year and CCM United’s multi-artist compilation We Will Stand, which received Special Event Album of the Year. A special edition of We Will Stand is the first product offered through the Christian Retail Only (CROnly) initiative launched as a strategic alliance between CBA and Content Road Media Corporation to provide exclusive content through the Christian retail channel.
Hosted by Tye Tribbett and for KING & COUNTRY’s Joel and Luke Smallbone, the star-studded, sold-out evening featured performances from Matthew West, Tamela Mann, Steven Curtis Chapman, The Isaacs, Natalie Grant and more. The biggest surprise of the night, however, came in the form of a dcTalk reunion that happened when TobyMac invited Michael Tait and Kevin Max on-stage, reuniting the trio for their first performance in 15 years.
Moreover, award-winning vocal group Phillips, Craig & Dean celebrated 25 years of music and ministry with a medley of their greatest hits. Plus, all of the New Artist of the Year nominees hit the stage back-to-back to give fans a glimpse at Christian music’s next generation of artists, which includes Hollyn, Travis Greene, Stars Go Dim, We Are Messengers and Feliz.
The 47th annual GMA Dove Awards will air exclusively on the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) this Sunday, Oct. 16. A full list of winners is available at www.doveawards.com.
