Since March 30, several of China’s largest online retailers have removed the Bible from sale in response to a move by Beijing to restrict its distribution. Some shops selling Christian books on Taobao, which is owned by Alibaba, have been reportedly closed permanently.

This activity is tied to a deal between Beijing and the Vatican related to the appointment of bishops, which if reached could normalize ties between the two that were severed in 1951.
